Michael and I decided to celebrate our second wedding anniversary by taking advantage of a Living Social deal, a cooking class – Cooking with Brews with Chef Matt Finarelli. We figured this was a good fit for us as I’m usually desperate to learn new recipes and well, Mike is a “beer snob” of sorts. Beer snob – it’s kind of like a wine connoisseur, only cheaper and with hops instead of grapes!
I was super happy to see that the menu was right up my alley:
Mixed Green Salad with Wheat Beer Vinaigrette (using Dreamweaver Wheat Beer)
Red Chile and Pork Posole with Amber Lager (using Dos Equis)
IPA, Wild Rice, and Fresh Corn Fritters (using Smuttynose IPA)
Chocolate Chipotle Stout Cupcakes (using Young’s Double Chocolate Stout)
Mike was super happy to find out that we’d be drinking the beers as well, especially since knowing that since I don’t drink beer (I keep trying, but still no dice), he’d get my portion too! The class took place at 918 F Street in DC, Living Social’s new events space. It’s chic and includes a neat kitchen space for classes like the one we attended. Chef Finarelli did a great job stepping the class through the menu and keeping it funny along the way. A beginner at all things culinary (except eating, of course), I was happy to have a few tips on knife skills and cooking in general. Though Mike’s specialty in our house is cooking a mean breakfast, he did a great job. Turns out we make a pretty good cooking team, though the “team” part is not evident in the pictures since, once again, I managed not to end up in any of the pictures.
We LOVED the fritters. Seriously, Mike couldn’t stop eating them. They went well with the juice from the pork posole (which I’d never had, but now will make on my own on a regular basis). The cupcakes were spicy, chocolaty, and best of all, NOT dry! In case you think the “date night” mood was taking its toll on our ability to judge tasty food – the postole and cupcakes have been great as leftovers too! We really enjoyed our anniversary celebration and can definitely see some more cooking classes in our future!
